Le Tour Yorkshire and Staff Management

With only days to go for the 2017 Tour de Yorkshire, the excitement is building up in the air.  When Le Tour Yorkshire kicks off on Friday 28th April, it will bring elite pro racing to the roads of the UK once again.

However, even though Yorkshire has held this type of event for the past 3 years, for some employers’ panic might be setting in as to how best to manage their staff during this legacy event which has become very popular with roadside crowds.

If you are operating over the weekend, here are some practical tips in managing staffing issues: 

1. Road Closures: If your business is located on or near the road closures, ensure that you clearly communicate your policy relating to annual leave and unauthorised absence to staff. 

2. Where possible, be flexible with late annual leave requests.

3. Consider allowing staff to work from home

4. Consider giving permission to watch the tour on the television in designated area’s i.e. a meeting room or rest area. It could even be used as a team bonding exercise where you put on a few light refreshments. 

5. Consider rewarding those that have been able to work during the weekend. 

6. Communicate your policy in relation to following the tour through the internet and radio. It would be reasonable for you to restrict this to breaks only. If you have a zero tolerance policy ensure that your staff are aware of it.
